The Queen Victoria Market! Need I say more? To be able to see just the produce was worth the visit. Wow! All of the food areas were great to drool over.
The food sellers were much busier than the other vendors. Wish I could shop here all the time!
After roaming around the Victoria Market, we headed off to walk a recommended path through the Arcades and Laneways of Melbourne. We were approaching it from the opposite side from where my map began. It was impossible to follow working it backwards so we gave up for the day and tried again the next day starting at the beginning. Doing it this way we were successful. The laneways started out as rear access to properties facing big streets. Many became roofed as "arcades" to keep out the weather. Today the area is LOADED with artsy spots, restaurants, and shopping with a capital S.
A couple of arcades. Lots of more high end shops. Fun to look at but not to purchase. There was a long line of folks outside a pastry shop that does high tea. Inside we saw what looked like a photo shoot going on. The next morning there was a photograph from the shoot. It had something to do with My Fair Lady coming to town later in the month. [The theater season had not yet begun while we were there.]
A couple of photos of the laneways.
We had lunch here on I think Hardware Lane. It was a Mexican tapas type place. The food was excellent. The restaurants have hawkers out front trying to talk you into dining in their place. It's just like we experience here.
Melbourne in the fall was wonderful!
Trip 3 has also been taken but we're just back so I haven't had time to write posts yet. Here's a teaser: We traveled to Belitung in the Bangka/Belitung Islands east of Sumatra for a long weekend. Posts coming soon!
